HISTORY AND TRADITION

The woodcarving art dates from the 16th century. What was originally only a way of surviving the long snowy winters has become a cultural item of considerable importance for this Ladin valley.

At first toys, tools and domestic utensils were carved and then works of art to sell at the spring fairs, to supplement the meagre returns from the earth. Later woodcarvers began carving artistic works and woodcarving became a famous art known throughout the world.

Today, skilled craftsmen are reviving these ancient traditions with carvings that combine historical flavour and the delicacy of contemporary art.
Woodcarvings are made mostly by hand. The subjects represented are inspired by the religious tradition of the Alpine area, but non-religious carvings are also enjoying ever more widespread success.

Gardena Art woodcarvings: small and large works of art made for those who appreciate artistic worth and perpetuate it in their own houses or in thoughts of their loved ones.
